Last night (January 7), Elton John took to social media to share the line-up for his annual Academy Awards viewing party in support of the Aids Foundation. For this year’s edition of the watch party, Chappell Roan has been announced as the event’s sole performer.

Joining Elton John and his husband David Furnish as co-hosts for the event are the likes of Jean Smart, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka to raise funds for AIDS research and to quell the negative stigma surrounding AIDS in the LGBTQ community.

In a statement to Rolling Stone, Elton John said about Chappell Roan’s upcoming performance: “David and I are thrilled to gather with friends and supporters once again, and we’re honoured to welcome the bold and authentic Chappell Roan as this year’s performer, whose artistry embodies the power of music to inspire change.”

Rolling Stone also reports that among the confirmed attendees so far are Megan Thee Stallion, Hozier, Sharon Stone, Mick Jagger and Sean Penn.

Chappell Roan and Elton John have struck up a quick friendship over the past year, as the former reached meteoric levels of fame – and criticism – that had a wealth of musicians and icons like John standing up for her.

Roan has been vocal about her experiences of fame over the last couple of months, venting about the normalisation of extreme fan behaviour, including “stalking, talking shit online, [people who] won’t leave you alone [and] yelling at you in public”.

Elton has since revealed that he’s shared several FaceTime chats with her and shared with her some words of advice: “Chappell was a little overwhelmed with her sudden success — although she’d been writing for a long time, it really kind of ballooned very quickly. I just try and calm her down and say, ‘Listen, it’s fine. It’s fine. Do what you want. Don’t listen to anybody. Walk at your own speed. Do not listen to the record company saying, ‘We want another album, we want another album.’ Do it when you’re ready to do it.’”

Elsewhere, Roan’s ‘Good Luck, Babe’ was recently named as NME’s best song of 2024. “With ‘Good Luck, Babe!’, Roan set out to write a ‘big anthemic pop song’. It was an unqualified success: over subtly insistent synth-pop, Roan serves up home truths to someone desperately trying to deny their queerness,” the entry read.
