Chappell Roan Reveals the Best Part of Her Success: ‘I Did Not Kiss the Ring’

After a wild couple years, during which she went from indie pop darling to genuine pop superstar and Grammy winner, Chappell Roan revealed the part of her success she’s most proud of is that she achieved it without compromising who she was.

“I did not kiss the ring,” she said on Call Her Daddy. “I did not jump through the hoops that I was told I had to to get a fucking Grammy. I did not have to kiss the ring of whoever. You either like me as I am, or don’t invite me to a party, or don’t invite me to an awards show.”

Roan added, “I’m most proud of myself for doing what makes me feel like a good person, over how can I get the most money. I just want to feel like a good person.”

Arguably one such moment where Roan ignored the usual pop star playbook was when she put out a frank, but earnest call to fans to stop bothering her in public. During the interview, she cheekily acknowledged that her plea worked, quipping, “I think people are scared of me. I think I made a big enough deal about not talking to me that people do not talk to me.”

Roan even said she’d been out with friends who are also artists, and they’ve remarked, “It’s a force field around us. People don’t come up to me If I’m with you.” Roan added, “I think I’m just like, ‘Damn, baby, you say it, too!’ You say, ‘Don’t touch me, don’t look at me, don’t talk to me — I don’t know who you are.’ And they won’t come up to bother you.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Roan opened up about how she’s expected to “play by different rules because I’m gay” and gets asked “a lot of fucking crazy questions” that many of her peers would not get asked.

“That’s because I’m gay and that’s because I have my opinions, but that doesn’t mean I’m completely like… I don’t know everything about every topic,” she said, adding: “I try to know everything I can, but when I don’t answer a question correctly or I don’t acknowledge one community, it’s like, how can I do it all? How can these girls tour, write, perform, interview, sleep, eat, and workout? And how can they do all and lead a team and be a boss and pay people and be like fucking so politically educated.”

Roan also revealed that she’s been in a “serious” relationship for six months: “I haven’t dated someone since this all really, really blew up,” Roan said. “I’m dating the same person that I was dating before I blew up, so I’m not sure how I would date now. I think it would actually be a nightmare. I think I would be so single right now because you’re terrified of their intentions. I’m scared. I don’t trust anyone. I just think in my head, I’m like, any new person that I’m texting, I’m like, ‘I’m assuming they will screenshot this and send it to someone else.’”

Near the end of the interview, Roan answered some quick fire questions, including her dream collaborator (SZA) and what else is in store for 2025 — including more new music. “‘The Giver’ is not the only song, I will say that,” Roan teased.
