Chappell Roan Gets the Job Done on Rousing Single ‘The Giver’

Chappell Roan has finally dropped her rollicking country single, “The Giver.” After debuting the upbeat track on Saturday Night Live in November, Roan has been teasing the song for weeks, both on social media and on billboards around the U.S.

The song, produced by Dan Nigro, features a lively, stomping chorus as Roan croons, “Cause you ain’t gotta tell me, it’s just in my nature/ So take it like a taker, cause baby, I’m a giver/ Ain’t no need to hurry, cause baby, I deliver/ Ain’t no country boy quitter/ I get the job done.”

“I love this song so much and it’s been such a fun rollout to see the bus benches and billboards and posters and tear-offs wow I am so excited for all of it to come to life!” Roan wrote on Instagram. “It is def a bold and scary move to release a full ass country song after only releasing one song last year and it having such a success in the pop genre .. (like I am very scared as I type this lol) but I think that’s the entire point of chappell roan. Be bold and scary and have fun. be popstar girl then pop an edible +watch YouTube vibes . The whole point of this is to be silly !!!”

She added, “Country music is fire. It’s the campiest of camp. some of you may be new to the country scene and not quite sure what to make of me having a fiddle and banjo in my song. Understandable boo ¨̮ it is something different and sometimes different can feel bad because it’s unfamiliar, but I encourage you to give her another shot 😉 Thank you to all the country divas who came before me.”

Earlier this week, Roan reflected on her love of country music on a new episode of Today’s Country Radio With Kelleigh Bannen on Apple Music. “I really just did it for fun,” Roan said of the new single. “I’m not switching genres or anything. I wanted to write a country song because I just thought it would be funny. It’s campy and fun.”

She added that Big & Rich’s 2004 track “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” was a big inspiration on “The Giver.” “I was like, ‘I want to feel that way on stage. I want to feel that,’” she explained. “Because that’s how I write. I’m like, ‘How do I want to walk around on stage and sing?’ And I was like, ‘I want to write that song, but Chappell’s version.’”

To launch “The Giver,” Roan is releasing five 7-inch limited edition vinyl records, each featuring artwork that showcases Roan as different service-oriented characters, including a lawyer, dentist, plumber, and private investigator. The characters mirror the personas on billboards in cities like Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles teasing the single.
