Chappell Roan Brings Out Christina Aguilera at L.A. Concert: ‘Honestly Paved the Way for Me’

On the first night of Chappell Roan‘s Super Graphic Spectacular in Los Angeles, the star had a “Coffee” date with an icon.

About midway through Roan’s set on Wednesday (Oct. 21), the singer-songwriter brought out surprise guest Christina Aguilera, who went on to belt a gorgeous rendition of her 2002 hit “Beautiful” before joining Roan in a duet of the latter’s Midwest Princess track “Coffee.”

“I want to introduce this person [who] honestly paved the way for me and all women in pop to do whatever the f–k they want, sing and wear whatever the f–k they want…and I’m so grateful to have her,” Roan said from the stage at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium before introducing Aguilera. “She’s a f–king legend.”

After hugging Roan and taking the mic, Aguilera offered her own praise for the younger star, stating, “From the moment I heard Chappell’s voice, I knew she was a force to be reckoned with.” She then launched into a pitch-perfect rendition of “Beautiful” as Roan looked on.

The pair subsequently dueted on “Coffee,” which Aguilera described as “one of my favorite songs of hers.” A visibly flustered Roan initially flubbed the opening line — eliciting a good-natured laugh from Aguilera — but quickly recovered and beautifully traded off verses with her pop elder before the two harmonized together for the song’s finale. You can watch video of the duet here.

During her set, Roan also performed a rendition of Olivia Rodrigo‘s “Expectations,” which the two released a remix of last week. She was preceded on stage by openers Lola Young, Tinashe, Amanda Lepore, Blaine Petrovia and Kyra Jeté.

Wednesday was night one of the two-night Spectacular, which continues Thursday (Oct. 22) with another headlining set by Roan along with performances by openers Caroline Polacheck, MUNA, Alisa Mae, Fantasia Royale Gaga and Sweaty Eddie.

All proceeds from the concerts will be donated to Roan’s Midwest Princess Project, which has raised more than $800,000 to date for over 60 organizations benefiting trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities.
