Britney Spears Biopic, Based on Her Memoir, in the Works

Singer confirmed a “secret project” was in the works with Wicked producer Marc Platt

The life of Britney Spears is coming to the big screen. On Thursday, the pop star announced that she was “working on a secret project,” seemingly a biopic, with producer Marc Platt. Minutes later, Variety reported that Universal Pictures had picked up the rights for the film, with Platt and Jon Chu — who are both working on Wicked — attached to develop it.

“Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt,” wrote Spears on X. “He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned 🌹🎥.”

No writers or cast has been set or announced.

According to reporting from The Ankler, the film will be based on the singer’s The Woman in Me memoir, which dropped last October. Spears’ book quickly became a best-seller. The book detailed Spears’ grueling 13-year conservatorship, parenthood, complex relationships with previous partners, and how her connection to music had been permanently altered.

The film follows 2017’s unofficial biopic Britney Ever After, which aired on Lifetime. At the time, a rep for Spears told Entertainment Weekly that Spears would not be “contributing in any way, shape, or form to the Lifetime biopic … nor does it have her blessing.”

Around the time of the end of Spears’ conservatorship, Spears’ life was also the subject of various documentaries, including the New York Times and FX’s Framing Britney Spears and Netflix’s Britney vs. Spears.

Last year, Josey McNamara — the production head behind Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap production company — confirmed to Extra that the company was not “chasing” the screen rights of Spears’ memoir following rumors of Robbie’s interest. “Sadly, no. She’s got an amazing story. I’m sure she’ll find the right people,” he said. “We’re not chasing it.”
