Britney Spears avoids jail time in DUI case after pleading guilty to reckless driving

Britney Spears has avoided jail time in her DUI case after pleading guilty to a lesser misdemeanour charge of reckless driving.

The singer was arrested on March 4 in Ventura County, California after police pulled her over on suspicion of driving under the influence, following reports of erratic, high-speed driving. She was later charged with a misdemeanour count of driving under the influence.

At a hearing on Monday (May 4), the case was resolved through a plea deal. Spears pleaded guilty, through her lawyer, to a reduced misdemeanour charge of reckless driving, known in California as a “wet reckless”, which applies to cases involving alcohol or drugs but is less serious than a DUI. In return, prosecutors dismissed the original charge.

As part of the agreement, Spears was sentenced to 12 months of informal probation. She must comply with court-ordered conditions including vehicle searches if requested by law enforcement, attending DUI education classes and continuing regular mental health treatment.

Spears’ lawyer Michael A. Goldstein said: “She’s doing well. It was reduced. The DUI was dismissed. She entered a plea to reckless driving.”

“I don’t think anybody is happy about pleading guilty,” he added. “We appreciate the district attorney recognising the positive steps Britney has taken to help herself, and we expect that she’ll continue to do so.”

Last month, Spears voluntarily checked herself into a rehabilitation facility, and she also spoke about the incident, sharing a video of her dancing with her 19-year-old son Jayden Federline and thanking fans for their support.

This is not the first time that the singer has been arrested after being behind the wheel. In 2007, she faced charges in a hit-and-run case, although these were eventually dropped and a jury acquitted her of driving without a valid California license.

Since then, she has gone on to publish her memoir, The Woman In Me, which made countless headlines upon its release due to the candid discussions of her career, relationships, 13-year conservatorship and personal experiences.

After its release, she was accused by her ex-husband Kevin Federline of using cocaine during a period when she was breastfeeding their two children. She responded by implying that Federline was trying to “profit off [her] pain”.

In 2023, Spears batted off accusations about drug use too, and said that rumours alleging that her family was concerned about her having drug issues were “not true”.

She also reportedly sold her entire music catalogue to Primary Wave for an undisclosed amount in the final days of 2025.
