Bowling For Soup’s Chris Burney retires “a legend” from band to focus on health

Bowling For Soup guitarist Chris Burney has permanently retired from the band.

The musician temporarily stepped back from his commitments with the Texas group last summer, and did not join them onstage at Download Festival 2024. Burney had reportedly suffered a leg injury, meaning he needed to return home from the tour.

Since then, Bowling For Soup have been performing live as a trio. They are scheduled to bring their ‘A Hangover You Don’t Deserve’ 20th anniversary tour to the UK next month, with Wheatus and Magnolia Park supporting.

Sharing a statement on social media yesterday (January 22), the group confirmed that Burney would not be returning to the line-up.

“To All Our Amazing Bowling For Soup Fans… It is with a heavy heart we announce that Chris Burney has made the decision to retire from his stage-right post in the band he co-founded in 1994,” they began.

“Some recent medical developments, 30 years of rocking balls and touring non-stop have made it difficult to continue. We are bummed to not have Chris by our sides, but absolutely support his decision.

“The three of us will carry on, with Chris’ blessing, and continue to build the legacy of this band we all love so much. We will not be replacing Chris or touring with a touring guitarist. You cannot replace a legend. We were brothers when we started this journey… and brothers we remain.

“See you at the shows and in your ears.” You can see the full statement in the post above.

Bowling For Soup are now comprised of Jaret Reddick (lead vocals, guitar), Gary Wiseman (drums) and Rob Felicetti (bass, backing vocals).

Their 11th and most recent studio album, ‘Pop Drunk Snot Bread’, was released in 2022.
