Black Keys Tap DannyLux for ‘Mi Tormenta,’ Their First Track in Spanish

“Mi Tormenta” will appear on a deluxe of their album Ohio Players set to release November 15

Rock duo the Black Keys have dropped a video for a new track, “Mi Tormenta,” featuring Mexican-American singer DannyLux. The single will appear on the deluxe version of the band’s latest album Ohio Players, out November 15 with three more previously unreleased tracks.

Of the deluxe, named the Trophy Edition, the Black Keys said in a statement that, “We held back five of our favorite tracks planning for their release to coincide with our tour of North America. Even though our year got turned upside down, we still needed to deliver these new songs to our fans! These tunes continue the collaborative spirit that you hear throughout Ohio Players including ‘Mi Tormenta’ with our extremely talented brother DannyLux.” Ohio Players (Trophy Version) will also feature Alice Cooper and Beck.

On the smoky “Mi Tormenta,” where Black Keys vocalist and guitarist Dan Auerbach sings about “Rebels and conquistadors/And lowlifes looking for a friend,” he also performs in some Spanish for the first time in the Keys’ discography.

In the video, Auerbach and Patrick Carney enjoy an obvious and endearing generational gap with DannyLux, whose whole verse is in Spanish as well. DannyLux came to prominence in the música Mexicana scene with his alternative corridos — takes on traditional, guitar-driven, storytelling songs. Growing up on American rock music and as a fan of the Black Keys, DannyLux said, “Being a part of this project helped me grow as an artist,” in a press release.

The Spanglish song comes ahead of the Black Keys Latin American tour dates next year. In the spring of 2025, they’ll take their International Players Tour (whose North American leg of arena and amphitheater shows was canceled amid reports of low ticket sales) to Lima, Peru; Estereo Picnic festival in Bogota, Colombia; and Mexico City.

Rolling Stone named Ohio Players one of the best albums of 2024 so far. It was released in April and marks the band’s 12th album.
