Anne Hathaway talks Jack Antonoff music collaboration for new film ‘Mother Mary’

Anne Hathaway has discussed working with Jack Antonoff on music for her new film Mother Mary.

The thriller, released April 24 in the UK, sees Hathaway play a pop star who abruptly ends her tour after an emotional crisis before reconnecting with an estranged friend and fashion designer (Michaela Coel) to prepare for a comeback performance.

For the film, Hathaway performed new songs written by Charli XCX and produced by Antonoff, who also worked with her as a “guide”. Hathaway’s performance of the track ‘Burial’ was released back in March, and can be heard here.

Now, the actress has opened up about working as a musician for the film, saying the experience was “humbling”.

This isn’t the first time that Hathaway has gotten involved in the soundtracks to her films, having also taken on singing roles in both the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables, and in 2011’s animated film, Rio.

However, in a new interview with Discussing Film, she explained how the experience differed from working as a musical theatre actress. “It’s kind of like asking if a ten-speed bike and a Harley are the same thing,” she said. “Technically, yeah, it’s the same genus, but the specifics are completely different, and I had to learn how to ride a Harley, you know, the intricacies of the voice to the microphone.

“It’s not something I’d ever really gotten to play around with, and that took a while for me to wrap my head around, but I had an amazing guide in Jack Antonoff,” she continued.

“He just kept giving me notes. We would go in and record, and then I would get to go meditate on what it was that Jack was talking about, slowly inch by inch, year by year, we got closer until finally the music’s what you listen to.

Hathaway has previously said that she based her character on Antonoff’s longtime collaborator, Taylor Swift.

As well as Mother Mary, Hathaway recently rejoined Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt for the sequel of The Devil Wears Prada.

As for Antonoff, Swift recently addressed rumours of a feud between the two of them.
