André 3000 Clarifies That ‘New Blue Sun’ Does Count Toward His Record Deal

Epic Records is counting the Grammy-nominated album toward his solo contract

During André 3000’s recent conversation with Rolling Stone, the legendary musician clarified that his New Blue Sun album is in fact being counted toward his solo record contract with Epic Records.

“There’s a story going around that my record company is not counting New Blue Sun against my contract, and that is not true,” he said. “At first, they didn’t, so that was true, because of the contractual reason that it’s not 90% like [my] last album. But, after I played New Blue Sun for the label and [they] saw that it was a real project, they thankfully counted it.” He added, “the story that’s going around now is very old.“

November’s wave aggregation derived from a conversation on Toure Show, the esteemed journalist’s podcast. The description of the “Andre 3000 – I Love Flute” episode has a disclaimer noting, “This episode is a very recent interview that we are introducing as a throwback.” During the conversation, he told Toure that his label won’t count the album because “It’s something [in the contract] where it says, ‘The next recording has to be 90 percent like the recording before.’…It stops you from turning in 10 tracks of hand-clapping and saying, ‘This is my album.’”

But apparently, since André and Toure’s original conversation, Epic reversed their stance on the Grammy-nominated project.

Elsewhere in the Rolling Stone interview, André 3000 talks about his work as a flutist, his future plans, and his thoughts on making new hip-hop music.
