‘Billy Joel: And So It Goes’ documentary to open Tribeca Festival 2025

The forthcoming new Billy Joel documentary will open the Tribeca Festival 2025, it has been announced.

Billy Joel: And So It Goes – a two-part doc directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin – is set to air on HBO this summer, as was revealed last month.

The project will examine Joel’s life and music, “exploring the love, loss and personal struggles that fuel his songwriting”. It’ll feature access to never-before-seen performances, home movies, and personal photographs, along with one-on-one interviews.

Now, it’s been confirmed that …And So It Goes will debut at the Beacon Theatre in New York City during the first night of this year’s Tribeca Festival on June 4.

Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Festival and Tribeca Enterprises, commented: “For nearly 25 years, the Tribeca Festival has celebrated the artists who give New York its heart and soul, and on the opening night of the 2025 Festival, we are thrilled to honor Billy Joel – an artist who has embodied that very spirit.

“Paying tribute to the legendary performer who captured the essence of a ‘New York State Of Mind’ is a perfect way to kick off this year’s celebration of creativity and inspiration.”
Lacy said: “I and my co-director, Jessica Levin, couldn’t be more thrilled about our film Billy Joel: And So It Goesopening the esteemed Tribeca Festival.

“Our thanks go out to Jane Rosenthal and the Festival team and to HBO and the wonderful folks there who have supported us throughout in our efforts to bring an in-depth, honest and musically expressive portrait of this complex talent.”

She added: “We are beyond appreciative of Billy Joel’s trust in us to bring his story to the screen. There is no better place for this film to premiere than at the Beacon Theater, the venue for so many historic musical events for decades, and in the city so important to Billy Joel.”

The full schedule for the 2025 edition of the event – including film, music, TV, audio storytelling, talks and more – is expected to be announced soon.

Lacy – who created PBS’ American Masters series and has helmed HBO docs such as docs Jane Fonda In Five Acts and Spielberg – previously explained: “For those who think they know Joel’s story, as well as those who are not as familiar, I believe this two-part film is both a revelation and a surprise.

“I was drawn to his story as someone who knew little at the outset, and was astounded at how autobiographical his songs are and how complex his story is. We are gratified that Bill trusted us with his story, which we have told as honestly as possible, diving into territory which has not been explored before.”

An exact release date for Billy Joel: And So It Goes has not yet been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Billy Joel recently postponed his planned UK shows for this summer until next year due to health reasons. He’ll return to the stage in North America this July.
