Surf Company Claims Lady Gaga Ripped Off ‘Mayhem’ Logo in $100 Million Lawsuit

Lost International alleges some of Gaga’s designs are “substantially similar if not nearly identical to” a trademark it’s held since 2015

Lost International, a prominent surf and lifestyle brand, has filed a $100 million trademark infringement suit against Lady Gaga, alleging some of her Mayhem designs and merchandise rip off one of its logos.

The dispute centers around Lost International’s “Mayhem” product line, which often features a stylized logo. Lost has held a trademark on “Mayhem” since 2015 and alleges that Gaga has “attempted to misappropriate the ‘Mayhem’ name, trademark, and stylized mark by releasing an album called Mayhem, launching a tour with that same name, and selling clothing and accessories with that name.”

The lawsuit specifically alleges that the way “Mayhem” is stylized on some of Gaga’s merchandise is “substantially similar if not nearly identical to” the stylized logo Lost often uses.

Lost claimed in its lawsuit that it sent a notice about the alleged infringement to Gaga’s team, but the musician has “failed and refused, and continues to fail and refuse to cease her willful and blatant infringing.”

In a statement shared with Rolling Stone, Gaga’s attorney, Orin Snyder, said, “Lady Gaga’s Mayhem soared to No. 1 and shattered records, a testament to her unmatched talent and global impact. It’s disappointing —but hardly surprising — that someone is now attempting to capitalize on her success with a baseless lawsuit over the name Mayhem. This is nothing more than an opportunistic and meritless abuse of the legal system.”

Lady Gaga released Mayhem earlier this month, marking her seventh solo album following 2020’s Chromatica, as well as her 2024 Joker: Folie à Deux companion record, Harlequin. Gaga is set to embark on a North American tour in support of the album this summer, with the run launching July 16 in Las Vegas and wrapping Sept. 17 in Chicago.
