Today (March 18), Chatten took to the band’s official Instagram account to share a statement via Instagram Stories, where he revealed he has suffered a herniated disc and requires “urgent medical attention”. As a result, Fontaines D.C.’s next five dates are being cancelled.

Chatten wrote: “I am devastated to announce that, due to a herniated disc, we must cancel our show in Mexico tomorrow night and our forthcoming dates in Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia.”

He continued: “I have been really excited to play these beautiful countries for years and it really hurts to be here in Mexico City and not be able to go onstage, but I have been advised today, that I require urgent medical attention. We are very grateful for all your support and, with all my heart, I am sorry that I can’t play for you.”

At the time of writing, it would appear that these shows are being cancelled entirely, as there is no indication that the band are working on rescheduling the five gigs for later dates.

The cancellation of the band’s South American tour dates come shortly after the band wrapped up their Japan, Australia and New Zealand tour earlier this month. The band will next kick off their North American tour in mid-April, though there is currently no word on whether Grian Chatten’s injury will affect those dates.

Later this year, the band will be returning to Europe and the UK for a run of huge outdoor headline shows and festival appearances this summer, including a sold-out stop at London’s Finsbury Park on July 5, Newcastle on July 13, Cardiff Castle on July 30, and Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park on August 15. Last month, the band released a new single ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’, which bassist Conor ‘Deego’ Deegan III told NME was inspired by being “in the presence of a newborn child” – the child of guitarist Carlos O’Connell, and how that the song was written around the same time as their recent album ‘Romance‘ but was simply left off the record as they wanted to keep the LP “concise”. ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’ will be released on vinyl backed by the b-side ‘Before You I Just Forget’ later this year. Visit here to pre-order it.
