The Kooks’ Luke Pritchard “writing songs” with Cruz Beckham: “He said, ‘Jesus was a nepo baby too’”

Cruz Beckham is turning his sights to a music career and has enlisted help from The Kooks’ Luke Pritchard.

The singer is friends with Cruz – who is the youngest son of David and Victoria Beckham – and is helping him out when it comes to songwriting.

Pritchard shared the news in a new interview with The Sun as part of the Bizarre column, and said that the two of them have a lot of common ground when it comes to their taste in music, and are working together to find his sound.

“He has really good taste in music,” he told the outlet. “We chat about early Bee Gees – there aren’t many people I can do that with. We started writing songs together and we’ve become mates. I’d just love to help him navigate [a career in music].”

Pritchard then went on to explain that Cruz is already aware of the obstacles he may have to face with having famous parents and has a lighthearted outlook on the “nepo baby” tag.

“He’s naturally going to come under criticism because of who his parents are. He’s aware of that. It was great when he said ‘Jesus was a nepo baby too.’ I thought that was quite a funny response.”

Cruz is now aged 20, but first launched his debut single when he was just 11 years old, sharing the festive track ‘If Every Day Was Christmas’.

Reports of the two working together come after the outlet reported last year that Cruz had signed a deal with a new music management firm and was looking to develop a “more guitar-led organic sound” compared to his debut single.

As for The Kooks, the band announced details of their seventh album ‘Never/Know’ at the start of the new year and dropped the title track as the lead single.

Due for release on May 9, ‘Never/Know’ follows 2022’s ‘10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark’ and was produced entirely by Pritchard.

Speaking to NME, the frontman shared how the band came to make the new material. “I spent so little time writing. I was still going about life, doing the dishes!” he said.

“I didn’t overthink it. It wasn’t necessarily strictly a stream of consciousness, but there was this vibe I was getting when I played it to my wife or my friends. It felt like there was maybe a debut-ism to it… trying to get into a flow state and let it ride – let it roll.”

He also added how trusting his “gut instinct” allowed them to make the new album, saying: “I have gone through phases of not trusting myself and my taste as well. Every artist has these songs that you’re convinced are the best thing you’ve done, and it maybe doesn’t connect the way you thought.

He continued: “I’m in quite a peaceful state right now, and I think we’ve been very blessed, with this incredible support – especially from younger audiences – that has really kept us fresh. We’re trying to deliver a feeling, and on this album, it’s positive and romantic.”
