Lady Gaga has explained why she spoke up for the trans community during her Grammy Award acceptance speech last month.
Gaga and Bruno Mars picked up the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance award for their collaboration ‘Die With A Smile’, which saw Gaga send a message of support to the trans community while accepting the Grammy.
She said at the time: “I just want to say tonight that trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love. Thank you.”
On March 5, the musician was interviewed by DJ Zane Lowe for Apple Music and spoke about why she is such a vocal trans ally. Gaga said she believes trans people must be “protected” from anti-trans laws that US president Donald Trump is trying to push through.
“What I would say first and foremost is what trans people are being faced with in this world is completely unfair, wrong, and there’s this violence that’s taking place on a daily basis in their lives,” Gaga explained.
“I think that we all need to support trans people and each other to know that they deserve to be supported and loved and protected and lifted up.
“What I go through in my life is very different from that, and what every community that is oppressed goes through is different, it’s all unique experience. And then there’s individual people, and everyone’s individual experience is different.”
Gaga also shared that one of the greatest things she learned is to take time to understand people’s stories and backgrounds, which has made her a better ally to the trans community.
Elsewhere in the interview, the musician spoke about ageism in the music industry, and how she was unsure if she would be “accepted” despite only being 38. “I ultimately decided that a woman could be powerful at any age,” she told Lowe.
The singer’s highly anticipated seventh album ‘Mayhem’ is out today (March 7). It follows on from 2020’s ‘Chromatica’ and her Joker: Folie a Deux companion record ‘Harlequin’ which was released last year.
In her interview with Lowe, Gaga has explained how the LP sits in her discography and the different approach she has taken with it compared to her previous albums.
In other news, Gaga is set to pull double duty on Saturday Night Live (SNL) on March 8, after ‘Mayhem’’s launch, where she will host the long-running sketch show and perform as a musical guest.
