Watch Julien Baker & Torres debut tender new song ‘Bottom Of A Bottle’ on ‘The Daily Show’

Julien Baker & Torres debuted their new song ‘Bottom Of A Bottle’ on The Daily Show last night, ahead of the release of their first album together on April 18 – watch it below.

It’s the fourth track the duo have shared from the album, ‘Send A Prayer My Way’, so far, following ‘Sugar In The Tank’, ‘Sylvia’, and ‘Tuesday’.

The song is a slice of tender Americana that puts their voices – particularly the voice of Torres – at centre stage: “I went swimming in a river of Four Roses/Next thing I knew, I was horizontal, and my friends/Were fishing me out of the bottom,” they sing together in the chorus.

Also on The Daily Show, they sat down with host Michael Kosta to discuss the album, their creative process, and their religious upbringings. “I think there’s this idea that you talk about a practice of a prayer, you’re talking about a dogmatic religious belief,” Baker said. “But I feel like organized religion is not necessarily the same thing. It maybe often gets in the way of pursuit of the divine.”

And of the album sometimes being labelled “queer country,” Torres explained, “I’m certainly proud of that. We’re queer. But if it were up to me it would just be country.”

Baker and Torres first began plans to make music together after they played a show together at the Lincoln Center in Chicago in 2016. Torres told Kosta, “Julien and I have been friends for a while and when the pandemic lockdown occurred I texted her, kind of out of the blue, because I’d been thinking about making a country record for a while.

“But I didn’t want to do it alone. And Julien was the first person I thought of because she’s from Tennessee. I’m from Georgia. It just made sense.”

In 2024, Torres opened one of Baker’s shows and the pair sang two new songs together. In November, they announced festival appearances together and created a new website, and in December, they shared their first single ‘Sugar In The Tank’.

In recent years, Baker has been busy in Boygenius alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, with the trio releasing their second album ‘The Record‘ in 2023. Her most recent solo album, ‘Little Oblivions‘, came out in 2021. Torres, meanwhile, released her sixth album, ‘What An Enormous Room’, last January.

The pair are set to perform two special acoustic shows in London this month, too. The first, with a record signing, will take place at Rough Trade East on March 17, while the second will be at St. John’s Church in Kingston on March 18. Both are sold out.
