Lady Gaga’s new “electro, grunge song” ‘Perfect Celebrity’ was “inspired by The Cure”

Lady Gaga has revealed that the song ‘Perfect Celebrity’ on her forthcoming album ‘Mayhem’ was inspired by the The Cure.

The singer’s highly anticipated seventh LP is set for release on Friday (March 7) and is available for pre-order here. It follows on from 2020’s ‘Chromatica’ and her Joker: Folie a Deux companion record ‘Harlequin’ which was released last year.

So far, Gaga has released three singles from the record: the hit collaborative track with Bruno Mars, ‘Die With A Smile’, ‘Disease’ and ‘Abracadabra’.

Now, speaking to Zane Lowe in a new interview, she spoke about ‘Perfect Celebrity’ describing it as “probably the most angry song” on the record.

She said: “There’s a lot of nineties energy in that song. The nineties is how I fell in love with music as a teenager. In the studio we all shared that in common as well, a love of that time.

“‘Perfect Celebrity’ started as an electro grunge song. It was also inspired by The Cure and the song ‘Never Enough’ I used to play in my apartment a million times before I walked into this bar. So it had that influence as well, that was sort of like the electro influence that came into it.”

‘Never Enough’ was originally released in 1990 from The Cure’s remix album, ‘Mixed Up’.

She continued: “After I made that song, I was like, ‘We need to change all the production’. I wanted to change everything and then I went back and said, ‘No we shouldn’t change everything’ because if I was to simply decide I was gonna now make an entire electro grunge album it was just to say it to myself as randomly cool in the middle of my project.

“I actually thought that that was boring and not at all what ‘Mayhem’ is all about. The true chaos of who I am is that I am actually a lot more than these concepts, I am so many concepts at once.”

Gaga went to reveal that ‘Perfect Celebrity’ almost became the working title for the album. She also said the electro influence also made it onto other songs on the record.

Gaga added: “There’s a song called ‘Can’t Stop The High’ on the version of the album that is on my website only. That is a pure electro grunge record that goes even harder than ‘Perfect Celebrity’ does.”

In the past the singer-songwriter has hailed The Cure praising the band’s headline set at Pasadena Daydream festival in 2019 and she previously named one of her singles ‘The Cure’ in 2017.

Elsewhere in the interview, Gaga also explained how ‘Mayhem’ differs from her back catalogue.

Meanwhile, she also recently revealed that she once considered “walking away” from music, saying she was “tested” in the past.
