“Skyfall,” the theme song for the 2012 film of the same name, earned Adele an Oscar for Best Original Song
As a first time Oscar attendee, Raye had big shoes to fill. The “Oscar Winning Tears” singer-songwriter performed Adele‘s orchestral ballad “Skyfall” to close out the James Bond tribute, and told Entertainment Tonight that performing the award-winning tune was a daunting task.
“It was such an exhilarating performance, also no one can sing Adele like Adele, and it’s scary,” Raye said. “It was terrifying but also so incredible at the same time.”
“Skyfall,” the theme song for the 2012 film of the same name, earned an Oscar for Best Original Song, marking the first and only Oscar win for the “Hello” singer. Adele previously performed the moody song at the 85th Oscars, in celebration for the spy franchise’s 50th anniversary. The track came in at Number 29 on Rolling Stone‘s “Adele Songs Ranked” list, with the song described as a “cinematic classic that escalated with the intrigue, mystery, and sultriness needed for 007.”
At the 97th Oscars Sunday, Blackpink’s Lisa and Doja Cat also performed as part of the James Bond tribute, which honored the film franchise’s producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Broccoli and Wilson, who are the daughter and stepson to James Bond producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, received honorary Oscars at the Governors Awards.
“It was so electric, we just have a beautiful chemistry and I just love those girls,” Raye said of her “Born Again” and Oscars collaborators. “They’re so kind and hard working and inspiring.”
Despite her nerves, Raye, who performed with her eyes shut, said she did get support from the Oscar-nominated actress Ariana Grande at the performance’s end.
“When my eyes opened, Ariana was there at the front, she stood up and she clapped,” Raye said. “It doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks because Ariana loved it and I’m happy with that.”
