The album opened with 137 million streams and 71,000 album sales
Tate McRae has earned her first Number One album as So Close To What has debuted atop Billboard’s Album chart, the publication confirmed Sunday.
So Close To What opened with 137 million streams along with 71,000 album sales, according to Luminate. McRae dethroned Drake and PartyNextDoor’s $ome $exy $ongs 4 U, which dropped to Number Two after opening atop the chart last week.
McRae’s Number One is years in the making, coming six years after she first signed with RCA back in 2019. She’s steadily built out her fanbase, with her momentum skyrocketing in the past year since releasing her hit single “Greedy,” which peaked at Number Three on the Hot 100 and has to date garnered 1.6 billion streams on Spotify. Think Later, which featured “Greedy” opened at Number 4 on Billboard’s album chart.
Elsewhere on this week’s chart, Kendrick Lamar’s GNX took third, SZA’s SOS took fourth and Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet rounded out the Top Five.
McRae spoke with Rolling Stone last week, opening up about starting the sessions on Slow Close To What not long after Think Later came out.
“Even though it’s work, writing feels like my safe space,” she said. “The stable part of my life is when I’m able to talk about my feelings. So, I feel like amidst how crazy the year was on tour, it actually was nice to come home and keep writing about my perspective on where I was at in life.”
McRae will embark on a world tour beginning later this month to promote the new album, starting in Mexico City on March 18.
