Kesha Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Life-Changing Debut Album ‘Animal’: ‘You Were That Bitch’

All That Glitters Is Gold

In a reflective Instagram post, the singer shared an old interview clip where she proclaimed she made the record “to make kids have fun and have dance parties and inspire people to just be happy”

When Kesha‘s debut album Animal was released 15 years ago, she had a clear goal in mind. “The only reason I made this record is to make kids have fun and have dance parties and inspire people to just be happy,” she said in an old interview clip, which she reposted on Instagram in celebration of the milestone anniversary. Kesha never could have predicted how Animal would change her life. “I had no idea you were that bitch,” she wrote in the caption. “But turns out you totally are.”

By the time Animal arrived in January 2010, “Tik Tok” was already months into an explosive run. And as Kesha noted in the post, the record had its all-time biggest streaming day last week with nearly 2 million Spotify streams. “Just goes to show that we all go through these same pivotal feelings and emotions growing up,” she wrote. “I’m so happy to have grown up with all of you.”

The video, which was accompanied by a carousel of Animal-era photos, was set to the album’s title track and combined clips from throughout the album cycle. It included shots from the “Blah Blah Blah” music video, as well as “Your Love Is My Drug” and “Take It Off.”

“I spent my whole life learning the art of songwriting from my mom, an iconic songwriter herself, so when Animal came out, it was a culmination of the sounds of growing up, the sounds of falling in love, heartbreak, the sounds of coming of age,” Kesha wrote. “I had no idea what these songs would open up for me and what kind of life I would be creating for myself just by putting these songs out in the world. I’m so happy I did, and so happy you’ve connected to it the way that you have, and continue to do so.”

Last September, Kesha launched her indie record label Kesha Records. The first two singles from her forthcoming sixth studio album, “Joyride” and “Delusional,” marked the first releases from the imprint. The singer’s mission statement for Kesha Records echoes the same goal she set at the the very beginning of her career with Animal. “Music has the power to connect the world,” she said last year. “And I aspire for my work to be a beacon of light and goodness.”
