Drum ‘N’ Bass streams rocket by 94 per cent in three years, says Spotify

Drum ‘N’ Bass streams have shot up by a whopping 94 per cent in three years, Spotify has claimed.

Over the last couple of years, Drum ‘N’ Bass (or DnB) has experienced a resurgence – while the subgenre has always had a steady stream of dedicated fans, interest in it has boomed thanks to hits like Chase & Status‘ ‘BACKBONE’ featuring Stormzy, and their 2023 chart-topper ‘Baddadan’.

In a new mini-documentary produced by Spotify titled DnB: In for Life, Charlie Tee, Flight, Kanine, S.P.Y. and more go through the genre’s oral history to discuss its impact and its roots.

In the documentary, Spotify shares a statistic based on its user data that the “yearly average streams of the Drum ‘N’ Bass genre on Spotify have increased by 94 per cent since 2021”.

Among Spotify’s Top 10 artists in the genre – per MixMag – are Chase & Status, Bou, Rudimental, goddard., Sub Focus, Charlotte Plank, Skepsis, Hybrid Minds, SHY FX and Nia Archives.

According to Spotify’s data, 68 per cent of the genre’s listeners are below the age of 34, marking a significant interest from a younger crowd. However, the Drum ‘N’ Bass scene – and other nightlife scenes – in the UK are in peril.

In October, research from the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) have revealed that unless significant changes take place, UK clubbing could be “extinct” by the end of the decade.

The new figures have revealed that 37 per cent of all clubs across the country have permanently shut since March 2020 – an average of three clubs a week and 150 per year. If the trend continues, all spaces in the UK will have closed their doors by December 31, 2029.

Offering a glimmer of hope for the genre, Drum ‘N’ Bass legends Chase & Status in September announced a UK arena tour for 2025.

They’ll take to the stage at arenas in Glasgow (April 29), Manchester (May 1), Birmingham (2), London (3), Nottingham (5), Cardiff (6), Plymouth (7) and Bournemouth (8). Tickets are on sale now – you’ll be able to buy yours here.
