Gayle and U2’s Larry Mullen Jr. Join Forces on ‘Between the Lines’

Mullen first reached out to the “Abcdefu” singer about collaborating on a single for “Left Behind,” a documentary centered on dyslexic children

Pop singer Gayle and U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. have joined forces for a new track, “Between the Lines,” which will be featured in the upcoming documentary Left Behind. The documentary centers around school resources for dyslexic children.

Mullen, who has a child with dyslexia, first reached out to the “Abcdefu” singer about collaborating on the documentary. Gayle, who has spoken openly about her dyslexia diagnosis, said she didn’t hesitate to join the project, according to Billboard.

“I have been pretty public about the fact that I have dyslexia, and that is something that has been a part of my whole entire life,” Gayle told the outlet. “Larry reached out to me about trying to collaborate for this documentary. He was talking about how passionate he was about the project, especially the fact that he has a child that has been affected with dyslexia. He had a view as a parent seeing how it’s affected his child. He didn’t have to sell me in any way.”

Left Behind, directed by Anna Toomey, follows several mothers frustrated by the lack of resources offered to dyslexic children. Together, they open New York City’s first public school dedicated to dyslexic students. The parents face institutional and personal hurdles and must persuade New York’s education system to invest in the dyslexic youth. The film releases on Jan. 17 at New York’s Quad Cinema.

The collaboration follows Mullen’s back injury, where a replacement drummer, Bram van den Berg, had to step in to wrap U2’s Las Vegas run at the Sphere. On Monday, The Edge spoke to Rolling Stone about his U2 bandmate and said he recently recorded a studio session with Mullen: “We don’t want to be over-doing it, but yes, it’s going great, and he’s in great form.”
