The search for the identity of ‘The Most Mysterious Song On The Internet’ may finally be over

The identity of the ‘Most Mysterious Song On The Internet’ seems to have been unveiled, with the song’s original creators claiming to have evidence of making the track.

For years internet users have been attempting to track down the identity of a new wave song that was recorded from a German radio programme in the mid-1980s. In 2007 someone by the name of Lydia posted the song on online forums, which had been recorded to cassette by her brother Darius years prior.

Dubbed ‘Like the Wind’, as per its opening lyrics, the song then became an internet mystery – with entire YouTube videos and even a subreddit called ‘The Mysterious Song‘ being dedicated to finding the song.

On Monday (November 4), user Marijn1412, a member of the Reddit community, claimed that the song had been identified as ‘Subways Of Your Mind’ by the German band FEX.

He explained that he encountered former members of FEX while researching an event for emerging bands, organized in the 1980s by a public broadcaster in northern Germany.

Marijn1412 wrote: “After I emailed him back that the song is actually quite a famous ‘lost song,’ he asked me not to go public with it until he spoke with his old band members. In the meantime, though, the song did get registered at [the German performance rights organization] GEMA and people found out about it. But I’m happy to say that the band members agreed for me to go public with it.”

The former band members were not aware that there was a search going on for the track. Speaking to German publication Tz, 68-year-old Michael Hädrich, the keyboardist, guitarist, and backing vocalist said: “We hadn’t noticed all this internet phenomenon at all, mainly naturally, because the title of the song was not known on the Internet and was therefore no relation.

“Only then did he point me out whether I didn’t realize that the song ‘Subways of your Mind’ is the ‘Most Mysterious Song on the Internet’.”

Hädrich claims that he and the group possess extensive evidence to prove the song is theirs, including materials from the original recording session, witness statements, and live performance recordings.

With the track’s newfound popularity, the members of FEX are reportedly planning a reunion to re-record a version of ‘Subways of Your Mind’, and to shoot a music video.

Earlier this year another mysterious song was identified thanks to Reddit. ’80s song dubbed ‘Everyone Knows That’ was found thanks to its feature in an old porn film.

In 2021, a snippet of the catchy pop track was uploaded to YouTube and shared on the forum WatZatSong in the hopes of identifying the track, which also became known as ‘Ulterior Motives’. The track sparked its own subreddit community, and eventually, it was narrowed down to a series of rights holders from the mid-1980s.

One user, called south_pole_ball, discovered that one listed songwriters called Christopher Booth had created works for porn films. Reddit users then proceeded to watch through his entire body of work until finding ‘Everyone Knows That’ exactly one hour, seven minutes and 31 seconds into 1986’s ‘Angels of Passion’.
