Cake target the ‘Billionaire In Space’ as they preview first new album in 14 years

Cake have shared a new song ‘Billionaire In Space’, taken from their upcoming new album set for release next year. Check it out below.

The Californian band haven’t released an album since 2011’s ‘Showroom Of Compassion, though in the 14 years since they have shared a spattering of B-sides, a live album and a 2018 charity single ‘Sinking Ship’ in aid of humanitarian charity Doctors without Borders.

More recently, they released a new recording ‘Hold You (Responsible)’ as part of ‘Songs For Sex’, a compilation album raising awareness of ongoing threats to reproductive rights in the US, with proceeds going towards the National Women’s Health Network.

Now, though, they’re coming back with their seventh studio album, and they’ve given the first taste in the form of a new song titled ‘Billionaire In Space’.

The yet-to-be-released song, which they debuted on Texas radio station KSTX, seems to take aim at real-life billionaires who seem to be intent on conquering space in recent years, despite the worsening climate crisis here on Earth.

Birds can’t fly away/ But there’s a billionaire in space / In an air-conditioned capsule / His flight is smooth and cool / His seats are ergonomically designed,” frontman John McCrea sings. Check out the full clip below:

So far, no release date for the album has been announced – though the video caption says it will be shared next year.

Cake have a couple of shows lined up, too. One is set to take place on the night of the US election (November 5) at Brooklyn Bowl in Las Vegas, and is in association with HeadCount – a nonprofit organisation that encourages people to vote.

Then, on November 23 they’ll play Chicago’s The Salt Shed. Get tickets to both shows here.
