Sofía Valdés Plays the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on New Song Featuring Cuco

‘How’s That Working Out?’ is the first offering from the Panamanian singer’s forthcoming debut LP

Sofía Valdés is back with the bouncy new single “How’s That Working Out?” Cuco joins the Panamanian singer-songwriter for the modern bossa nova blend of jangly guitar and sleek beats perfect for late summer. The track marks Valdés’ first music release of 2024.

The fresh burst of the pop-leaning “How’s That Working Out?” is a departure from the delicate, acoustic melodies of Valdés’ previously released EPs. Meanwhile, Cuco’s verse is a major stamp of approval for Valdés’ rising star. Along with the sleek single, the LA-based duo shared a new video. In it, Valdés lobs the song’s rhetorical questions at a rotation of different men, and plays into the “crazy” ex-girlfriend archetype until Cuco joins her side.

As Valdés explained in an Instagram post announcing her collaboration with Cuco, the collaboration between the two Latin stars came together organically. “It was already mixed and mastered when we realized we really wanted Omar on the track,” Valdés wrote. “I texted him the song and next day he was at the studio.”

Valdés and Cuco hosted an Instagram Live for the release of “How’s That Working Out?,” in which Valdés revealed that this won’t be the only collaboration on her forthcoming debut album. Singer-songwriter DannyLux will bring his jazz-inflected regional Mexican to Valdés’ new project. The collaboration with Cuco is only Valdés’ second. Previously, she worked with Pink Sweat$ on the 2022 single “Broken.”

In 2020, Valdés released her first taste of music and followed up with her acclaimed debut EP “Ventura.” Since then, the soft-spoken, evocative singer-songwriter has shared another refreshing set of sweet, jazzy songs for “In the Bloom.” In the fall of 2023, Valdés dropped her latest EP, “Silvia” which acted as “the first installment” of the singer’s forthcoming debut album. Her full length project is out later this year.
