Killer Mike Will Close ‘Michael’ Album Era With ‘Songs for Sinners & Saints’

When Killer Mike released his sixth studio album Michael last June, it marked his first solo studio album in more than a decade. Earlier this year, the record was awarded Best Rap Album at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The accolade would have been the perfect closing page for this chapter of the rapper’s career, but he isn’t ready to move on just yet. On Friday, Killer Mike will release Songs for Sinners & Saints.

Billed under Michael & the Mighty Midnight Revival — his gospel group — the 10-track project bids farewell to Michael with music recorded shortly after the album was created. “I had a year to live with Michael,” Killer Mike shared in a statement, “and I realized I had more I wanted to do with this sound before moving on.”

He also found himself with more experiences to work through in the recording booth. “Humble Me,” a recently released single that will appear on the project, recounted his experience being arrested at the Grammy Awards the same night he took home the Best Rap Album award.

“Not only was I not done with the sound and feel of Michael, I realized I might not be done with some of the songs from it as well,” the musician continued. “Slummer” and “Something for Junkies” from Michael, he explained, “happened in the same universe. I always looked at both songs as one long play of sorts so this was a chance to try that out. These are songs that deserved another approach and now I’m torn on which version I like better.”
