Watch Laufey’s cinematic new short film for ‘Goddess’ – by ‘Past Lives’ director Celine Song

Laufey has today (April 16) released a new short film for her song ‘Goddess’, which has been directed by Past Lives director Celine Song – watch it below.

The video stars Laufey alongside William G. Hardy (from Netflix’s Heartstopper), and was shot in Brooklyn, New York on 35mm film.

Speaking about the video, Laufey said: “It was so special to work with Celine on the ‘Goddess’ short film. She has such a clear vision with her work, which became immediately evident to me while watching Past Lives, and her ideas around ‘Goddess’ harmonised perfectly with the narrative of the song.

“There was immediately a shared understanding that made the partnership so seamless and I feel so lucky to collaborate with someone whose work I admire so much.”

Celine Song’s Past Lives was NME’s film of the year in 2023, with our five-star review saying “Past Lives will make you think your hardest, most devastating breakup was not only worth it, but the best moment of your life.

“…Whether in NYC or Seoul, Song can scarcely resist signposting each location change with a soothing sunset or golden horizon. If Past Lives is anything to go by, her future in Hollywood will be just as bright.”

Speaking to NME last year for a cover feature, Laufey opened up about her hope of bringing jazz to a wider audience.

“I always said to my mom, I remember when I was 11 in the car, ‘I want to do for jazz music what Taylor Swift did for country music’,” she explained. “With every day, with every little achievement, I feel like I’m getting closer to that goal of bringing jazz back to my generation.”

Laufey also spoke to NME about winning her first Grammy this year.

“It was so special,” she told us back in March. “Meeting other artists was the most shocking part of the Grammy week for me. It was crazy to see artists that I listen to, and to get to talk to them and see that they knew who I was as well, somehow… that felt beyond me! It was really cool and I felt like I was part of a community.”
