Jennifer Lopez Walks on Glass Shards From Her Shattered Past in ‘Rebound’ Video

Jennifer Lopez takes a cutting approach to transparency in the music video for “Rebound,” a song from her recently released studio album This Is Me… Now. The video arrives as an extended edit from the Prime Video film This Is Me…Now: A Love Story, directed by Dave Meyers.

“When you watch my Amazon Original, This Is Me…Now: A Love Story, you will see Rebound, and the performance is one of my favorites,” Lopez wrote on Twitter earlier this week during a listening session for the album. “It’s painful, and emotional, but the glass house metaphor is so impactful and raw.”

In the video, Lopez is quite literally bound to an abusive partner. Together, they cycle through highs and lows that always end in one of them being hurt both physically and emotionally. But as they battle in their own glass house, they share translucent walls with other couples experiencing the same cycle of abuse.

When Lopez is finally able to break away, she sprints down hallways and corridors that warp into a maze of indistinguishable destinations. Soon enough, it all shatters and she walks away for good, stepping across shards of broken glass and leaving a trail of blood in her wake.

According to a press release, “Rebound” was inspired by Ben Affleck’s encouragement that Lopez, his wife, write “about the pain and upset in her tumultuous journey of love.” It continues: “The video depicts abusive relationships in all forms, and it is the first time she has revealed the truth of her past experiences, with the overarching message and intention to help others get out of similar situations. Love should never hurt.”

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Lopez shared: “This Is Me… Now is actually accepting who I am. It’s saying, ‘This is me now! This is who I am and I embrace that fully with all the scars, mistakes, and all of the amazing accomplishments, and beauty, and all of the different things that are me. At this moment in time, I’m going to accept and love that person.”
