Robbie Williams Explains the White Substance on His Face That Sparked Concern at World Cup Final

Robbie Williams has addressed the white substance that fell out of his mouth and onto his microphone at the World Cup Final, cheekily shutting down speculation that he was using drugs on live television.

In an Instagram video posted Monday (July 20), the star lies shirtless in bed, filming himself. He begins by telling the camera sarcastically, “I’d just like to apologize for the object that fell onto the microphone yesterday.”

“It was deeply unprofessional, and people worried about me,” he continues in the clip. “But it’s OK, because I had several more, too.”

At that, Williams opens his mouth to show two breath mints on his tongue, confirming that what people saw on TV the day prior had been nothing more than candy.

The clarification comes after an outpouring of posts online about the moment Williams — who performed during the World Cup’s closing ceremony on Sunday (July 19) following Spain’s victory over Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey — joined Magenta TV for an interview at the event. As he spoke, a small fleck of white fell out of his mouth and onto the top of his microphone, after which he removed it with his fingers. When he reached up to scratch his head moments later, the substance ended up visibly stuck to his forehead.

Many people on social media posted snippets of the moment and questioned what the white material was, with some claiming that it had fallen out of his nose instead of his mouth. Williams has been open in the past about his prior substance abuse issues, which flared at the height of his fame with former boy band Take That.
