My Chemical Romance reportedly working on secret theatre project

My Chemical Romance are reportedly working on a new theatre project.

The emo icons are back, playing their huge ‘The Black Parade’ tour in the UK, Europe and North America this year, in celebration of the titular album’s 20th anniversary.

The UK leg kicks off with a show at Liverpool‘s Anfield Stadium on June 30, and it later includes a trio of shows at Wembley Stadium in London in July. They have also announced the huge list of support acts for the tour, which includes the likes of Echo & The Bunnymen, Interpol, Joan Jett, Skunk Anansie, Sunny Day Real Estate and Mogwai.

So far, the gigs have seen them play ‘The Black Parade’ in its entirety, along with rarities from that era and some hits. At a show in LA over the summer, MCR debuted an unreleased track titled ‘War Beneath The Rain’, and seemingly teased new material by wiping their X/Twitter account clean.

Now, it looks like something to do with the band could be coming to the theatre too.

In a new interview with Broadway World, playwright and actor John Cameron Mitchell spoke about what he has in the pipeline, and said that he was working on a “project for theatre” with My Chemical Romance.

While he kept his cards close to his chest about what the project could entail, he did then make an appearance on the Only Child podcast and shared slightly more information, adding that there was something in the works, but everyone was determined to keep it under wraps for now.

“It’s a little secret. It’s not announced yet, but you know I’m gonna give you a little zzzt there. That’s all you’re getting,” he said. “And you know, we still gotta sign stuff, but they’re great people. They’re so luxurious now that they do one [show] a week.”

While there are no further indications about what the new project could look like, it may be similar to that of the Broadway musical based on Green Day’s huge ‘American Idiot’ album. That production featured contributions from the band’s own Billie Joe Armstrong, and ran for over 400 shows between 2010 and 2011.

Neither Gerard Way nor any of the other MCR members have spoken publicly about a potential new theatre production based on their music, and more details are likely to be shared later this year.

Despite persistent rumours of new music over recent months, MCR have yet to follow up on their fourth album ‘Danger Days’, which dropped in 2010.

In 2022, the band shared their first new single in eight years, ‘The Foundations Of Decay’. More recently, they released a 21st anniversary deluxe reissue of their classic second album, 2004’s ‘Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge’..
