Travis Kelce might be the subject of Taylor Swift‘s song “Wood,” but even he didn’t immediately clock a reference to one of its lyrics on the latest episode of New Heights.
On the podcast posted Wednesday (Jan. 21), the Kansas City Chiefs tight end and his brother/cohost, Jason Kelce were both confused when reading a comment from a fan that they should sell a “New Heights of ‘manhoodie’” as merch. “What’s a man-hoodie? Is that a thing?” Jason asked.
When their producer reminded them that the comment was a callout to “Wood” — on which the pop superstar sings, “New heights of manhood/ I ain’t gotta knock on wood” — Travis laughed. “I didn’t understand that,” he said. “Taylor’s gonna kill me for not knowing that!”
When the retired Philadelphia Eagles center chalked it up to them not being “as good with the Easter eggs as these Swifties,” Travis conceded, “They sure know how to plant ‘em and call ‘em out.”
Much ado was made about “Wood” when it first came out, mainly for its suggestive lyrics about, well, Travis’ manhood. After the track dropped in October along with the rest of Swift’s 12-week Billboard 200-topping The Life of a Showgirl, Jason went as far as asking his younger brother whether he felt “cocky” about having his physique praised by his now-fiancée in song.
“It’s a great song,” Travis said on New Heights at the time, playing coy. “I love that girl … any song that she would reference me in that way …”
“It’s not just you,” Jason countered. “It’s an appendage. It’s a very specific thing.”
“What?” the Grotesquerie actor added sarcastically. “I think you’re not understanding the song.”
Beyond spending three months at No. 1 on the U.S. albums chart — and producing Swift’s longest-running Billboard Hot 100-topper to date, with “The Fate of Ophelia” clocking 10 weeks so far at the chart’s summit — The Life of a Showgirl earned the 14-time Grammy winner the biggest opening sales week for any album in the modern era. Debuting with more than 4 million equivalent sales units, Showgirl shattered Adele’s prior record with 25.
