Green Day to Play Super Bowl Opening Ceremony Celebrating 60th Anniversary of NFL’s Big Game

Super Bowl 60 adds some Bay Area flavor prior to February 8 game at Santa Clara, California’s Levi’s Stadium

This year’s Super Bowl in Santa Clara, California has added some Bay Area flavor as Green Day will perform at the big game’s opening ceremony on February 8.

The NFL announced that the East Bay punk trio will take the stage at Levi’s Stadium for a performance that celebrates the championship game’s history, with past Super Bowl MVPs walking the field as Green Day play a medley of hits.

“We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!” Billie Joe Armstrong said in a statement. “We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”

“Celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honoring the NFL legends who’ve helped define this sport, is an incredibly powerful way to kick off Super Bowl LX,” Tim Tubito, the league’s senior director of event and game presentation, said in a statement. “As we work alongside NBC Sports for this opening ceremony, we look forward to creating a collective celebration for fans in the stadium and around the world.”

Green Day previously announced plans to be in San Francisco during Super Bowl weekend, booking a February 6 gig at with Counting Crows at Pier 29 on the Embarcadero.

Bad Bunny will serve as the Super Bowl 60 halftime performer, with Charlie Puth enlisted to sing the National Anthem. Brandi Carlile will be on hand to perform “America the Beautiful” while Coco Jones will deliver “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
