Trey Songz Charged With Assault for Allegedly Punching Nightclub Employee

“He is cooperating fully and looks forward to the facts coming to light,” the singer’s lawyer says

R&B musician Trey Songz is facing multiple criminal counts, including one for assault, after he was arrested Sunday and charged for his alleged involvement in two separate incidents at different New York City establishments more than a week apart.

Manhattan prosecutors alleged the singer, 41, was partying at Dramma Night Club in Times Square on Dec. 4 when he became “needlessly irate” and allegedly punched an employee in the face, according to the New York Post. The incident purportedly unfolded around 4:25 a.m., after the singer, whose real name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was told that the establishment was closing, the outlet said.

Neverson was arraigned Sunday on an assault count linked to the Dec. 4 incident and then was also hit with a second-degree mischief charge for an unrelated disturbance at Mira restaurant and hookah lounge in Manhattan early Sunday, The Post reported.

During that second incident, Neverson allegedly broke around $1,500 worth of restaurant property, including hookahs, DJ equipment, and sofas, his criminal complaint reportedly said. The singer was released on his own recognizance and was wearing a black face mask as he left court, The Post said. The nightclub worker was granted an order of protection because Neverson was a regular at Dramma, the outlet reported.

“He is cooperating fully and looks forward to the facts coming to light,” Neverson’s lawyer, Mitchell Schuster, said in a statement sent to Rolling Stone. Schuster said the Sunday morning incident at Mira wasn’t his client’s fault. “Trey was confronted by individuals who instigated a confrontation and attempted to surround him. His security intervened to protect him and contain the situation, and an altercation occurred in the ensuing confusion,” he said.

The lawyer suggested his client was targeted by individuals acting “in pursuit of headlines or financial gain.”
