The song is the latest preview of the Brighton trio’s second album ‘Hope You’re Satisfied’, which is released on March 13 via Distiller. Pre-order/pre-save here.

“‘Hit Me When I’m Sore’ is about being hurt, but when you know how it feels, then it can sting but it doesn’t break you,” explained frontwoman Theresa Jarvis of the resilience she shows on the cut.

The driving and powerful track sees Jarvis ruminate over an ex-partner, singing: “Didn’t know how much I could miss ya/  ‘Til you were really out of the picture/  Thought you were a permanent fixture.”

She adds: “Tell me in the end was it worth it? Underneath it all nothing’s perfect/ I gave you my heart and you hurt it/  But I’ve been here before/  So hit me when I’m sore/ I said hit me when I’m sore/  I’m sore.”

‘Hot Me When I’m Sore’ is accompanied by an official visualiser, created by Kane Hempson. The clip sees Jarvis take out her frustration by smashing up a black heart piñata as her bandmates watch on. Tune in here:

The single comes on the heels of Yonaka’s recent tracks ‘Cruel’ and ‘Problems’. ‘Hope You’re Satisfied’ follows on from the band’s 2019 debut ‘Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow’, and was produced by bassist Alex Crosby and Dimitri Tikovoi (Placebo, The Libertines).

It sees and sees Jarvis explore matters of the heart: “This record’s about love but it’s not all gooey – it’s the dirty bits and the harsh bits that happen to everyone whether you admit it or not.

Yonaka’s new album is described as a “turbo-charged” collection that is “brimming with confidence”. ‘Hope You’re Satisfied’ is a “joyful reclamation” of the trio, “wrestled from the brink and pushed into its truest form yet”.

The outfit’s debut LP was followed by the ‘Seize The Power’ mixtape (2021) and EP ‘Welcome To My House’ (2023).

During an interview with NME about ‘Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow’ in 2019, Yonaka said they were “ready to start writing the next one”.

Crosby explained that the band wanted to go “somewhere different, definitely” with their second full-length project, adding: “We don’t want to do the same thing, our tastes are always changing.”

Jarvis added: “It’s got to be fresh. I’d love to do a Marvel-themed album.”

Crosby went on: “I think I speak for everyone, we need to do music. Regardless of whether it’s a job or not, it’s something we’d be doing anyway. It’s something we all need in our lives.”

Tonight (Monday December 1), Yonaka will begin their support slots with Don Broco on their UK headline tour. Find any remaining tickets here.
