According to The Hollywood Reporter, the singer-actor has been tapped to star in an upcoming reboot of the film for Universal Pictures. While reports have yet to confirm what role Carpenter will be playing, The Hollywood Reporter suggests that she approached the studio with ideas as far back as a year ago and that the film is somewhat of a “passion project” for her.
Additionally, Carpenter is expected to produce the film. A release date has yet to be set, nor have other cast members. Lorene Scafaria, who wrote and directed Jennifer Lopez’s crime movie Hustlers, will pen and helm the upcoming reboot.
The film franchise was most recently rebooted by Disney in 2010, directed by Tim Burton. That billion dollar-grossing live-action film saw Alice portrayed by Mia Wasikowska, while other prominent roles were filled by Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Matt Lucas, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry and more. It spawned the 2016 sequel, Alice Through The Looking Glass.
The upcoming film will be a retelling of the Lewis Carroll’s iconic Victorian era story, that was later adapted into a Disney animated film in 1951.
The film will mark the latest film to star Carpenter, who was a Disney Channel alum growing up, and in September was announced to join the cast of Seth Rogen’s The Muppet Show revival for a one-off special in 2026.
As for her music, Carpenter has clinched six Grammy nominations including Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for ‘Man’s Best Friend’ and Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Music Video for ‘Manchild’.
