“I am inspired and motivated and liberated and ready to take on this new girl, this new woman,” Skye shared
Justine Skye is down to keep the conversation flowing all night in her live performance of “Yap” for MTV Push. The singer delivered a pulsating rendition of the record paired with slick choreography and a crew of dancers in a warehouse for the set that marks her latest accolade, being named Global Push Artist for November.
On the “Yap” outro, Skye admits to being something of a chatterbox. She proves this to be true when discussing her songwriting process with MTV. “I prefer for everything to be created into the room. I know that some artists can get a beat and write anything… If I can’t feel it, then I get stuck,” Skye said. “I feel like if I am not having fun making the song then it shouldn’t be made in this moment. I never used to have people in the studio with me because I feel like people get bored. Now that I switched my sound it is fun … and we are dancing around and high energy.”
“Yap” follows singles “Oh Lala” and “Bitch in Ibiza,” which marked Skye’s return to music after two years. The records lay the foundation for the concise creative vision she developed during her time away. The club-ready, propulsive tracks are a clear departure from the slow and sensual R&B albums she created earlier in her career. But Skye sees more benefits in taking risks than staying stagnant, and she’s witnessed the payoff in her favorite artists, too.

“Beyoncé was definitely and still is such an influence in my career. Going to a Beyoncé concert was like homework for me,” Skye said. “I feel like Beyoncé is one of the few artists that has consistently stayed with the times and evolved her sound and image and the way she goes about her art… It is just such a beautiful thing to see. You are always waiting to see what she does next.”
What’s next for Skye? More breakthroughs, more yapping, and more music. “This moment for me feels very special. I know that I have been in the industry for a long time, but I am so excited in this new era that I am in,” she said. “It feels like I am starting from scratch which is the best thing ever for me… I am inspired and motivated and liberated and ready to take on this new girl, this new woman.”
