Grimes defends Selena Gomez from “body shaming” and “high school level bullying”

Grimes has defended Selena Gomez from “high school level bullying” online.

The singer, real name Claire Boucher, took to X/Twitter to defend the Only Murders In The Building star recently, after seeing hurtful comments aimed at her.

It related to a post that another user shared, sharing screenshots from the music video to Gomez’s ‘In the Dark’ and claiming that she looked like an “X Files monster”.

Taking to X, Grimes called out the user for going out of their way to find unflattering stills that “misrepresent” the artist, and for subjecting her to “high school level bullying”.

“Watched this Selena Gomez video,” Grimes began. “Besides a few weird derp shots that ppl were able to clip and super misrepresent how she looks, she looks extremely beautiful, is prob one of the most beautiful girls,”

“Imagine what it wud feel like if people talked about you this way (sic).”

Grimes went on to add that the “body shaming” post made her consider deactivating her account.

“Try to imagine the mental fortitude she presumably has,” the ‘Genesis’ singer added. “How do we not utterly morally castigate someone who has a post like this, blows up, and chooses to keep the clout at the expense of everybodies mental health (sic).

“How do u think little girls feel reading stuff like this about another woman?”

Grimes continued: “Accounts shud be suspended for body shaming en masse (sic). This is disturbing – in part because it’s not even true if u actually watch this video.

“I’m not rly in the biz of even knowing what celebrities do, i have no context here, but this place is unhealthy as fuck, and this being socially acceptable behaviour is culture death – not just for the Selena or the writer but everyone who sees this and engages with this level of dehumanization (sic).”

The music video for ‘In The Dark’ arrived last week and the track was made by Gomez for the season two soundtrack of the Netflix series Nobody Wants This.

She also contributed another song to the show, ‘Sunset Blvd’, which she made alongside husband Benny Blanco and appeared in the first episode.

For Grimes, the singer recently shared a new song called ‘Artificial Angels’, which was written from the perspective of artificial intelligence. After sharing the music video, she took to social media to draw attention to a new tattoo she got on her face which “literally no one noticed”.

Before then, she called out the intense beauty standards being pushed online and in the media.

“Do any other women feel like ur being choked to death on beauty culture?” she wrote on X, after seeing an ad online for a makeup store. “Can I go somewhere where someone isn’t shoving ‘DONT YOU WANT TO BE BEAUTIFUL’ down my throat.

“The insidiousness of what our culture does to young women is insane. I feel enraged knowing I won’t be able to protect my daughter from this. What a monumental waste of mental space.”
