This Is Lorelei is back with a new album (sort of). The New York-based singer-songwriter, a.k.a. Nate Amos, announced today that he’s releasing Holo Boy on Dec. 12 via the esteemed indie label Double Double Whammy.
The album is a collection of re-recorded songs from Amos’ early years, originally written between 2014 to 2021. Ahead of the release, he dropped the slacker-rock stunner “Name the Band,” which you can hear below. “I don’t wanna mess you up like that,” he sings over and over.
Amos, who is also one half of the experimental duo Water From Your Eyes, doesn’t see Holo Boy as a retrospective compilation, nor is it a new album exactly. “I tried to look at the catalog as little as possible and more just think to myself, ‘What are songs from the past that I feel like are good songs, demonstrate growth, and are significant to me, in terms of embodying a certain period of time?’” he said in a statement.
Instead, he views this project as more of a prequel to his 2024 album, Box for Buddy, Box for Star, which became one of last year’s most notable indie breakthroughs. (The deluxe edition, released this spring, drew even more attention via collaborations with MJ Lenderman and Snail Mail.) “The songs on Box for Buddy, Box for Star are really similar, and they’re produced in such a way that the differences are accentuated,” Amos noted. “Whereas with Holo Boy, the songs are really different, but they’re produced in such a way that the commonalities are accentuated.”
Amos named Holo Boy after the holodeck on Star Trek, a 3D device used to project realistic simulations. The album marks his third release of 2025, after the Box deluxe edition and Water From Your Eyes‘ It’s a Beautiful Place. Following his current tour with Water From Your Eyes, he’ll play two This Is Lorelei shows in December: one at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn (12/17), and another at the Fillmore in Philadelphia (12/19).

“There were a couple of songs where my initial reaction was like, ‘Oh, little Nate, this is adorable,’” Amos said. “But some of the songs, I listen to and I’m like, ‘Wow, this is such a growing pain song,’ and then there are certain songs where I’m like, ‘Jesus Christ, I’m glad I’m out of there.’”
