Charli XCX made a surprise appearance during Role Model’s Saturday Night Live performance – check out footage of the moment below.
Last night (October 11), the musician – real name Tucker Pillsbury – made his debut as musical guest and performed ‘Some Protector’ and ‘Sally, When the Wine Runs Out’, and, as is tradition in a Role Model set, a special guest was invited to join him on stage for the song.
Usually, it’s a fan from the audience, although Conan Grey, Reneé Rapp and SNL‘s own Bowen Yang have also made the cut. On Saturday night, viewers were surprised by the addition of Charli as his Sally.
It follows the two joking on social media about faux Sally girl drama, after Pillsbury had her former ‘Sweat Tour’ co-headliner Troye Sivan join him onstage. Referring to her now husband, George Daniels, he’d quipped: “You can have [Sivan] back if you give me George.”
Charli herself hosted SNL for the first time last year, where she pulled double duty as a musical guest, performing ‘Brat‘ tracks ‘360’ and ‘Sympathy Is a Knife’.
Fans have been speculating that the latter track – in which she sings: “Don’t know if I’m spiralling / One voice tells me that they laugh / George says I’m just paranoid / Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show / Fingers crossed behind my back / I hope they break up real quick” – has now been answered by an apparent Taylor Swift diss track.
Swift released her 12th studio album ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ on Friday (October 3), the follow-up to last year’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, and of the 12 new songs, none has been dissected quite as closely as ‘Actually Romantic’.
The song is widely rumoured to be a diss track directed at Charli, with many fans interpreting the lyrics to the song as a swipe at the singer. “I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave,” Swift sings. “High-fived my ex and then said you’re glad he ghosted me / Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face / Some people might be offended / But it’s actually sweet.”
This line stuck out to fans upon the track’s release, given Charli’s marriage to The 1975 drummer Daniel, while Swift was in a brief relationship with the band’s frontman Matty Healy in 2023.
Swift has since said ‘Actually Romantic’ is “a song about realising that someone else has kind of had a one-sided, adversarial relationship with you that you didn’t know about. And all of a sudden they start doing too much and they start letting you know that actually, you’ve been living in their head rent-free and you had no idea.”
