OutKast announce 25th anniversary deluxe reissue of ‘Stankonia’

OutKast have announced details of a 25th anniversary deluxe reissue of their 2000 album ‘Stankonia’.

The Atlanta duo’s fourth studio album, ‘Stankonia’ was released in 2000 and marked an expansion of their musical palette, with André 3000 embracing a more melodic vocal style and the arrangements embracing psychedelia, gospel, funk and rave. It boasted the classic singles ‘B.O.B.’, ‘Ms. Jackson’ and ‘So Fresh, So Clean’.

Now, the reissue of the album will be made up of a triple vinyl set that will include new bonus tracks – ‘Speed Ballin’, which has never appeared on streaming platforms, the Goodie Mob-featuring ‘Sole Sunday’ and new mixes of ‘B.O.B.’ from the Beat Bullies and Cutmaster Swiff.

The package will also include new cover art from André 3000 and unreleased photographs from the album’s promotional cycle, as well as a glow-in-the-dark poster and deluxe gatefold packaging. It is released on October 31 via Legacy Recordings and you can pre-order yours here.

An accompanying merchandise sale will begin on October 2, with t-shirts sporting graphics from the original ‘Stankonia’ photoshoot, as well as hoodies, caps and André 3000-designed posters. Explore the full range of items here.

Last December, André 3000 said that OutKast were “further away” from making new music together “than we’ve ever been”.

“I’ll say maybe 10, 15 years ago, in my mind, I thought an OutKast album would happen,” he said. “I don’t know the future, but I can say that we’re further away from it than we’ve ever been.”

“It’s hard for me to make a rap, period, you know? And sometimes I’m in the belief of, ‘Let things be’”, he told Rolling Stone.

He continued: “[OutKast] was a great time in life, and our chemistry was at a certain place that was undeniable,” he said, brushing against the notion that “something has to last forever”.

“It probably should not last forever,” he added. “It’s not like a product. In the end, we did give a product, but what made that product was a certain time in both of our lives.”

“It’s not like we’re Coca-Cola, where it’s this formula that you can always press a button and it’ll happen. I think the audience feels that way. But the audience never knows what it takes to make what they’re getting. I can’t blame them for that.”

In May this year, he released a surprise solo EP ‘7 Piano Sketches’, a series of improvisations on piano mostly recorded at a house in Texas.

OutKast, meanwhile, are set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November, alongside names including The White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper and Soundgarden.
