Bob Dylan‘s early years on the New York and Minnesota folk scenes will be chronicled on the upcoming 18th volume of the Bootleg Series, Through The Open Window, 1956-1963. It arrives on October 31.
The 8-disc deluxe box includes 139 tracks that begin when Dylan was just 15 years old in 1956, and stretches through his triumphant headlining set at New York’s Carnegie Hall eight years later. There are 48 performances in the collection that have never been released. There will also be a 2CD/4LP “Highlights” edition with 42 tracks. Princeton historian Sean Wilentz contributed a 125-page essay to the collection. “Of that time and those places, this collection is just a fragment,” Wilentz says in a statement, “Even so, as an aural record of an artist becoming himself—or in Dylan’s case, his first of many artistic selves—the collection aims to collapse time and space, not as a nostalgic reverie but as a living connection between the past and the present, the old and the new, which are never as distinct as we might think.”
Some of these recordings will be familiar to Dylan aficionados with extensive bootleg collections. But they’ve all received significant audio upgrades from new tape sources. And many of them have never even circulated in fan communities. “Liverpool Gal” is especially noteworthy since it’s an original tune that’s never been released, and most fans have never even heard.
The set begins with a teenage Dylan singing “Let The Good Times Roll” at Terlinde Music Shop in St. Paul, Minnesota, on December 24, 1956. There are scattered recordings around his native Minnesota before he moved to New York City in 1961 and began playing Greenwich Village clubs like Gerdes Folk City and the Gaslight Cafe, as well as numerous parties that his friends had the foresight to document.

On the latter discs, the studio sessions for the Freehwheelin’ Bob Dylan and The Times They Are-A Changin’ are chronicled along with the 1963 Newport Folk Festival, the 1963 March on Washington where Dylan and Joan Baez performed prior to Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and finally a complete recording of Dylan’s October 26, 1963 concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
