Earl Sweatshirt Releases Surprise Album ‘Live Laugh Love’

The rapper also shared a music video for the LP’s debut single “Tourmaline”

Earl Sweatshirt dropped a new album, Live Laugh Love, after teasing it to fans throughout the week. The LP features 10 tracks, including “Gamma (Need the Love),” which references the late Dave Trugoy of De La Soul, and single “Tourmaline,” which reflects on Sweatshirt’s role as a father.

The rapper explained that the LP began as a tongue-in-cheek critique of the irony in the titular phrase, but quickly developed into something more genuine. “I named it before I wrote it,” he said in a statement. “And then everything started clicking.” Sweatshirt explained of his creative process, “Constrictions breed creativity. There are rules to reality. It reminds me of Ifá—how spirits operate within that system. I need rules. I need assignments.”

He added, “Music is the thing I’m the most ‘leave it cleaner than you found it’ about. If you’re not hard on yourself as an established artist, it atrophies you. If you’re not resilient about the play of this shit—the core essence—your art becomes what it is: widely accepted but not challenging.”

Live Laugh Love follows Sweatshirt’s 2022 effort Sick! and 2023’s Voir Dire, a collaboration with the Alchemist. The rapper shared a music video for “Tourmaline,” directed by Devlin Claro and creative directed by Sage Elsesser, alongside the album. The artsy clip was shot in New York City and Los Angeles.

Sweatshirt will perform as part of Tyler, the Creator’s 2025 edition of Camp Flog Gnaw. The annual festival will takeover Dodger Stadium on Nov. 15 and Nov. 16. Although tickets to Camp Flog Gnaw are sold out, fans can join a waitlist on the official website. The rapper also performed during last year’s edition.
