Selena Gomez has shed light on her relationship with Taylor Swift and how they bonded over their break-ups with separate members of the Jonas Brothers.

Gomez dated Nick Jonas for a brief spell in 2008, while Taylor Swift dated Joe Jonas around the same period. Those relationships only lasted a few months, and led to Gomez and Swift forging a friendship from the fallout.

Speaking to Jake Shane on a new episode of the Therapuss podcast, Gomez reflected on how their break-ups brought her closer to Swift. “Taylor and I dated the Jonas Brothers,” Gomez told Shane.

“I dated Nick, and she dated Joe… We all know and love each other now, and it’s so cute. We didn’t know what we were doing. She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other.”

“I was about 15, she was about 18, and that’s when it was the crazy, curly [hair] Taylor, and she had all these bracelets that went all the way up [her arm]… We became best friends, bonded over the breakup, as girls do. Then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after, and here we are now 16 years later.”

Indeed, Swift and Gomez’s friendship has remained strong throughout the years since, with Gomez now engaged to Benny Blanco and Swift dating American football star Travis Kelce. Back when Gomez and Blanco announced their engagement in December last year, Swift commented on their social media post: “Yes I will be the flower girl.”

Following their engagement, Gomez and Blanco released the collaborative album, ‘I Said I Love You First’ which chronicled the couple’s “love story” – they worked together on several of her hit songs dating back to 2015’s ‘Same Old Love’.

The pair confirmed their romantic relationship in December 2023, with Gomez confirming that she had been seeing the producer for about six months.

That album scored a three-star review from NME, with Georgia Evans writing: “While each track is enjoyable in isolation, the album struggles to establish a singular voice. And that’s a shame, given Blanco’s past pop supremacy. Instead of offering a truly revealing glimpse into their relationship – as the album cover suggests – ‘I Said I Love You First’ maintains a noticeable distance between artist and listener, and leaves you feeling a little empty by the end.”

The record followed Gomez confessing to fellow actor Saoirse Ronan that while she thinks she’s “a little too old for the pop star life” now, she’ll “always have music in my life because my partner’s a musician, and I love having moments to do it for fun.”

Prior to that, she said that her music career “isn’t going away”, but that she’d like to focus on acting as she gets to hold on to her “sanity” as acting would allow her to tell other people’s stories rather than her own through music.
