Lorde explains new track about “unprotected sex and taking a pregnancy test”: “That whole song just destroys me”

Lorde has opened up about a track from her upcoming album that is about “unprotected sex and taking a pregnancy test”.

The Kiwi pop star is set to release her fourth studio album ‘Virgin’ on June 27 and so far she has previewed it with the singles ‘What Was That’ and ‘Man Of The Year’. Now, she has given fans another taste of the record during an interview on the Therapuss With Jake Shane podcast, which you can watch below.

On the show, she said there are “some fucking slammers” on the album and when prompted to speak about one of them, she said: “There’s a song that I love so much that’s called ‘Clearblue’ and it’s about unprotected sex and just this experience of taking a pregnancy test and this flood of emotions that goes through your body.”

“Whatever you want it to say, it’s such a, like, moment,” she added. “And that whole song is just so…it destroys me. Like, I can’t even really listen to it.”

Among other topics, Lorde also spoke about why she chose to name the album ‘Virgin’: “It speaks to a sort of purity, but the album is quite sexual, so it wasn’t sexual purity. Virgin steel, virgin hair, all of these things that denote purity, but I’m also kind of always trying to take me to my teen self.”

Lorde is set to embark on her UK, European and North American ‘Ultrasound’ tour later this year. She recently promised fans that the forthcoming gigs “could be our masterpiece”.

Special guests on the tour will include The Japanese House, Nilüfer Yanya, Chanel Beads, Empress Of and Oklou, as well as Blood Orange – with Devonte Hynes featuring on the album – and co-producer Jim-E Stack. She also made an unexpected appearance at a Lorde-themed party in Australia last month, while in April, she played her comeback single ‘What Was That’ for fans at an impromptu event in New York, shortly after police shut down a pop-up gig.

After rumours began to swirl that she might be due to play a secret set at Glastonbury – which takes place the same weekend as the album’s release – she said she was “pretty keen, honestly” about the idea.

“I am quite tempted by what’s going on because I’ve got lots of friends playing as well. We’ll see, we’ll see if I can pull some strings and get there.”
