Watch Sabrina Carpenter hitchhike across the US in new video for “song of the summer” ‘Manchild’

Sabrina Carpenter has shared the ’70s-inspired music video for new single ‘Manchild’. Check it out below.

The new track marks the first from the pop star in 2025, following on from her dominating the charts last year with singles including ‘Espresso’, ‘Please, Please, Please’ and ‘Taste’.

Written alongside frequent collaborator Amy Allen and hit producer Jack Antonoff, the track captures a feel-good energy for the summer, and blends influences from country.

The lyrics see her unapologetically call out inept men and the music video sees her hitchhike across the US at sunset, casting them aside one by one.

Why so sexy if so dumb?/ And how survive the Earth so long?/ If I’m not there, it won’t get done/ I choose to blame your mom,” she sings, building up to the euphoric chorus. “Man-child, Why you always come a-running to me?/ Fuck my life, Won’t you let an innocent woman be?

Check it out below, along with the video directed by Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia, which sees Carpenter square-dance in a dingy bar, open fire on the highway, bathe with piglets and more.

In a post on Instagram, the singer shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot and explained that she wrote the song “on a random Tuesday… not too long after” completing work on her hit 2024 album ‘Short N’ Sweet”.

“Not only was it so fun to write, but this song became to me something I can look back on that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life,” she added, also describing it as the “embodiment of a loving eye roll”.

“It feels like a never-ending road trip in the summer! Hence why I wanted to give it to you now – so you can stick your head out the car window and scream it all summer long! Thank you always and forever for listening, and thank you men for testing me!!”

News of the new single was shared earlier this week, when Carpenter dropped a teaser that showed her struggling to hitchhike. A number of mysterious billboards were also seen around Interstate 69 in celebration of the single, with one reading “Hey men!” and one stating: “I swear they choose me, I’m not choosing them”.

With the teaser, some fans speculated that the single could be a nod to her split from Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan – particularly with the new single arriving nearly a year to the day after he starred in her ‘Please, Please, Please’ music video.

Since its release, the track is already a hit online, with some comparing it to the success of ‘Espresso’ – which topped the UK Singles Chart last summer, was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the Grammys, and became the second-most streamed song on Spotify for 2024.

“ALREADY OBSESSED,” one fan wrote on X/Twitter, while another shared: “Yes, it’s true ‘Manchild’ by Sabrina Carpenter seems familiar, it reminds me of something. It reminds me of SONG OF THE SUMMER.”

“‘Manchild’ is my song of the summer idgaf,” a third added, while someone else praised the new music video writing: “Mentally I live in the Sabrina Carpenter cinematic universe”. Check out more fan responses below.

The release of ‘Manchild’ comes as Carpenter has been embarking on a ‘Short N’ Sweet’ world tour. The shows have already completed their run in the US, and will this weekend with a headline slot at Primavera Sound festival. Afterwards, the ‘Bedchem’ singer will headline two nights at BST Hyde Park, where she’ll be joined by Clairo, Beabadoobee and Olivia Dean. Visit here for remaining tickets.

In other Sabrina Carpenter news, the singer has been linked to a possible role in Mamma Mia 3, and is set to return to Fortnite soon for an “epic dance party”.
