Spotify to introduce ‘snooze’ button for tracks

Spotify has unveiled a new feature that will allow users to “snooze” certain songs they need a break from.

A press release from the music streaming giant introduced the option to remove a song from your recommendations for 30 days if you have grown tired of hearing it but don’t wish to eliminate it entirely.

Spotify said: “This option allows you to temporarily remove a track from your recommendations, so you can keep things fresh while leaving the door open for a future reunion. We’re starting to test this for Premium users and are planning to bring it to more listeners soon”.

This new feature will be rolled out alongside an improved Queue menu, with controls like Shuffle, Smart Shuffle, Repeat, and Sleep Timer. They also boast a more intuitive Hide button, improved playlist management tools and more intricate curation abilities.

The improvements come after the streamer endured highly publicised technical issues in recent months. In April, users reacted with frustration as Spotify crashed, leaving widespread outage for people across the world.

More than 40,000 users logged complaints on Downdetector, which tracks problems with platforms, indicating they were having issues with the Spotify app and website, according to Variety. Meanwhile, fans of System Of A Down were declaring “an international crisis” when the band’s popular 2001 album ‘Toxicity’ temporarily disappeared from the service.

In more positive news, the streamer recently claimed it had paid out $10bn (£7.7bn) in royalties in 2024, the largest payout to the music industry in a single year.

The streaming service said 1,500 artists earned over $1million (£755,295) in royalties, marking a 10-fold increase in its yearly payout figure from 2024, where $1billion (£755.2million) was given overall.

Earlier this month (May 1), the company collaborated with Travis Scott to create a new shirt for Spanish team FC Barcelona, with the artist’s Cactus Jack label being featured as a sponsor for the team’s pivotal match against Real Madrid.
