Hear Sufjan Stevens’ ‘Death With Dignity’ Demo From ‘Carrie & Lowell’ Reissue

10th anniversary reissue of singer-songwriter’s most personal album arrives May 30

Sufjan Stevens has shared the demo for the Carrie & Lowell opener “Death With Dignity” ahead of the 10th anniversary reissue of that 2015 album.

The singer-songwriter also paired the acoustic demo with a video featuring original artwork, archival photos, and 8mm film of the album’s titular Carrie Stevens’ mother, who died in 2012, from his personal collection.

“Death With Dignity” is one of five demos that appears on the two-disc reissue, joining Carrie & Lowell tracks “Should Have Known Better,” “Eugene,” and “The Only Thing,” as well as the previously released early rendition of “Mystery of Love” off the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack. The other two tracks that close out the second disc of the release include “Wallowa Lake Monster (Version 2)” and “Fourth of July (Version 4).”

Carrie & Lowell (10th Anniversary Edition), out May 30, will also boast a 40-page art book containing four generations’ worth of family photos, images captured by the musician, and drawings reflecting the weighted themes present across the album. It also contains a new essay from Stevens.

Carrie & Lowell is presented in its full form once again, alongside a glimpse of the different roads it could have taken,” a description of the reissue said. “There are new corners to explore, photographic realizing of moments previously only lyrically painted, direct reflection from the album’s creator, subtly different weight on certain syllables that speak to Sufjan’s mind right before he shared it with the world.”
