Watch Toronto Grunge Punk Band Metz Reunite on ‘Everybody’s Live’

After declaring they were going on indefinite hiatus last fall, Metz came back together to perform “A Boat to Drown In” on Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney.

The latest episode of the Netflix talk show featured appearances by Conan O’Brien, Ayo Edibiri, and Tina Fey, and was unexpectedly themed around Christmas. At the end of the episode, host John Mulaney announced the band, noting, “They’ve reunited for one night only.” He also dubbed the Toronto grunge punk group “one of my favorite bands ever.”

In October, Metz – guitarist and vocalist Alex Edkins, bassist Chris Slorach, and drummer Hayden Menzies – announced they would be taking a break. “We’ve collectively decided to close this chapter of Metz,” the musicians wrote in a statement. “The band will be on ‘indefinite hiatus’ while we take time to focus on other endeavors and enjoy more time at home with our families.”

They added, “If you’ve ever attended a Metz show, you know it was more than a band to us. We gave every ounce of ourselves to Metz, and it will be very hard to let it go. The intangible feeling of connection, community, and inclusivity that music creates has always been at the heart of what we do and will inevitably be what we miss the most. We will miss singing, screaming, sweating, and dancing with all of you.”

“A Boat to Drown In” appeared on the band’s 2020 effort, Atlas Vending. They subsequently released their fifth LP, Up on Gravity Hill, in 2024 via Sup Pop. Rolling Stone celebrated their 2015 album, II, with a rave review, writing, “Metz’s genius, like Nirvana’s, is their ability to embed hooks in even the most abrasive onslaughts, and express emotion that, as fever-pitched as it gets, is always irreproachably honest.”
