Song will appear on hard rockers’ upcoming album
It’s barely Tuesday morning, you’re finishing your first coffee of the day, shrugging and sighing at the headlines, and here comes Lzzy Hale to bum you out. The message of Halestorm‘s latest single, a moody power ballad titled “Darkness Always Wins,” essentially reminds you that evil never dies. The chorus starts off positively enough — “We’re all fighters, holding up our lighters/Chasing off the monsters, drowning in our sins” — but then Hale hits you with the ugly truth: “With every last breath, try to stop the sunset/Running with the shadows, darkness always wins.” What the song has going for is its catchy, brooding, and dramatic in all the ways we love Halestorm songs to be.
To Hale, the song is simply journalism. “‘Darkness Always Wins’ is not a song of hope, nor is it a song of despair,” she said in a statement. “It is reality. History repeating. Evil prevails and the good depart first. But we are not doomed as long as we persist and keep our fires burning. The war may not be won in this lifetime. But our mission is to pass the torch so that those who follow have a light to fight with.”

The song, which Halestorm cut with producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile), will appear on the band’s upcoming album. The group isn’t revealing any further details about the record yet.
Odds are good that the album will be out soon enough, though, since Halestorm have a stacked touring schedule that will allow them to go all around the world, reminding people that darkness always wins. (Fortuitously, hard rock fans are pretty into that philosophy). They’ll be opening for Iron Maiden in Europe, dropping by Ozzy Osbourne’s and Black Sabbath’s last show in Birmingham, England, in July, and supporting Volbeat in the U.S.
