It comes after the singer began hinting at new material at the end of last year, wiping her social media accounts and leading to fans believing that a new chapter was on the way. She also shared exactly one second of new music, alongside several pictures of herself inside the studio, writing: “will be back in touch”.
The hints continued into 2025 too, with the singer wiping her website and sharing a brief clip on TikTok earlier this month, which saw her walking through New York City’s Washington Square Park, listening to a new track that includes the lines: “Since I was 17, I gave you everything / Now we wake from a dream, well baby, what was that? / What was that?”
Earlier today, the singer told fans that “everything is about to change”. That change is likely coming in the form of a new single, which she has confirmed is titled ‘What Was That’.
In an Instagram post featuring a photo of her with water dripping from her face, Lorde said the new single would be arriving “soon”. However, the bio on her Spotify page now reads “04.25” – suggesting that new music will be arriving on April 25.
As previously mentioned, the new updates come from speculation that has been ongoing since 2023. As well as sharing one second of new music, Lorde has hinted on a now-deleted Instagram post that she was working on new music. She then promised fans she would show them something in 2023, writing: “No this is not the start of anything out there, just want u to know there’s a light on inside me .. show it to you soon.”
The ‘Ribs’ artist has released a new album every four years, beginning with 2013’s ‘Pure Heroine’, 2017’s ‘Melodrama’, and most recently, 2021’s ‘Solar Power’.
She has dropped new music as part of a collaboration in 2025. Earlier this year, she and Marlon Williams joined forces on ‘Kāhore He Manu E’ – with the pop singer saying the collaboration was “one of my favourite things to do on earth”.
